Gizella Days
Gisela Days in Veszprém
The beginning of May is a special time of the year for us who are living in Veszprém: Around the 7th May, which is the name-day of Gisela, we remember the wife of our first king, Saint Stephen, Blessed Gisela of Bavaria, Queen of Hungary. Our city had been the property of the Hungarian Queens since thousand years, when King Saint Stephen had donated the town to his Queen, Gisela.
Veszprém also played an important religious role during the struggle to make Christianity the official religion of Hungary. St. Stephen defeated his greatest opponent Koppány nearby Veszprém and the city became the first Episcopal seat of Hungary. His wife, Queen Gisela, also favoured the city, and for centuries the queens of Hungary were crowned by the bishop of Veszprém. The city thus earned the name the city of queens. Today, a statue stands in memory to the royal couple.
Veszprém has been celebrating our first Queen with the Gisela Days Art Festival since 1992, opening its welcoming gates in the blossoming springtime.
Folk-dance show and handicraft market, Hungarian star-parade and family entertainments, classical music and serenades, exhibitions and processions, mediaeval traditions and renaissance programs, folklore groups representing the colourful minority-cultures in Hungary, offer a unique chance to spend a few spring days in Veszprém.
