Veszprém Summer Festival

The Veszprém Castle, this wonderful, human-made Baroque scenery, is an ideal venue for a starlit summer night entertainment� You feel the breath of centuries � shadows of old: honourable queens and handsome princes, diligent maids and skillful craftsmen, valiant soldiers and lavish clergymen as well as grim German knights or desperate Hungarians on war-path against the Turks - a condensed Hungarian history�

Local legend has it that the town was founded on seven hills, just as Rome was. According to the notary of King Béla III, a castle already stood here when the first Hungarians arrived. It was believed to be a 9th century Frankish fortress.

The important sights of Veszprém including the cultural venues and excellent lookouts are clustered in the castle district. What little remains of the former fortress encircles this hill, marking the location of the castle.

Here you find an abundance of historical buildings and ruins. Among them are the castle museum, the baroque Fire Watch Tower, the statue of the first Hungarian royal couple, the Roman Catholic cathedral of St. Michael, founded in the 10th century and much more�

The Veszprém Summer Festival, from its first edition of 2001, each year offers open-air concerts, dance-theatre and folklore performances in the Castle Holy Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér) to all art-fans visiting our town from North and South, East and West. Oratorios and musicals, jazz on brass and folk music, ballet and folk dances make the programme of the �Summer Nights in the Castle�-part of the Veszprém Summer Festival. As you like! Second advice: reserve your tickets on-line!

When walking up to the Castle, it is quite likely, that from the doorways of Allianz-Hungária Insurance Company courtyard (Óváros tér 19-20), or further on, from the VEAB courtyard (Vár u 37) you hear music. Yes, the chamber-music series under the title �Music Court�, allow you to enjoy the masterpieces of chamber music, songs, opera excerpts, chansons, jazz, ever-greens, klezmer, guitar or syrinx�

On the Old Town-hall Square (Óváros tér) Multicultural Nights offer world-music and dances for young and young-in-the-heart audience � free of charge. Third advice: have a comfortable shoe for joining in the kolo, czardas, syrtaki, salsa, Irish step-dance�
